Lightning In A Bottle
Primoris Records 2839- 00127-2
(3 out of 4 stars)
Modern country from goodlooking youngster with all the right ingredients for country-pop stardom.Yet another new name on the block, this time in the shape of a youthful looking, energetic performer whose early ambition was to be a movie star. To this end he moved, first to New York City and then to Los Angeles where he was gradually starting to make a name for himself having gone down the route of featuring in ads before landing small parts on TV. Conscious that he had the type of singing voice which had found favour in country music in recent years and also aware that he was capable of writing credible lyrics, Bradshaw happened to attend a Jimmy Webb concert and it was this performance by a hugely successful songwriter which helped him come to the decision that, as much as he loved acting, perhaps his future lay in music. Like countless hopefuls before him, he headed for Nashville, discovered that he had a lot to learn, teamed up with a number of fellow writers and paid his dues singing in small venues as well as making appearances at the Bluebird Café until certain industry people began to sit up and take notice. He signed a deal with Primoris Records and, with the help of Jeff Bryant, founding member of the successful Ricochet and Dennis Dearing, a respected producer, Bradshaw managed to
gather a group of outstanding musicians, including Steve Rutledge (acoustic and electric guitar), Dave Pomeroy (bass) and Tammy Rogers and Wanda Vick (fiddle), with the latter also offering mandolin on some tracks. Collectively they have helped Bradshaw to record and release this, his debut album and the first single from it, the swirling, philosophical The Last Thing You Do, sung and played in pleasing 3⁄4 time
has been attracting a lot of attention. Bradshaw is very much a product of modernday
Nashville blending contemporary country with a liberal dose of pop sensibility. Typical examples of this approach are manifest in the opening track, the driving
Baby You’re So Cool, Friction and Lightning In A Bottle, but all credit to the man, whether he is singing these songs, patently aimed at younger audiences or attempting a more serious country style, as he does on the soulful That Was Me, a co-write with Noah Gordon, and one of the highlights of the album, White Cotton Dress, another pleasing ballad or The Last Thing You Do, he is certainly not averse
to utilising crying steel, twin fiddles, mandolin, country style guitar and piano. His voice is vibrant and expressive and he shows considerable skill in terms of his writing, and with his good looks and, by all accounts, his high energy live performances, it is most likely that we shall be hearing more from this young man in time to come.
